OUR COACHES

Shan Shukla, Co-Head Coach

Shan joined VSSC in the 2023 season and has been an amazing addition to the club, coaching our Intermediate and Advanced groups with thoughtfulness, dedication, and real vision. A recent transplant from Ontario, Shan laced up speed skates for the first time at the age of 8 starting off at the Brampton Speed Skating Club, in Brampton, Ontario, then went on to skate with the Toronto, and Cambridge Speed Skating Clubs competing in Provincial level competitions, the Ontario Winter Games, and Nationals. In the relay, he was part of Team Ontario and secured the Silver medal in 2011!

David Zeibin, Co-Head Coach

David joined VSSC in the 2023 season and leads coaching of the beginner group with a focus on lots of fun while building skills. He’s been on ice for almost every practice this year and has a lot of fun with the kids! He is an experienced skater but his first experience with speed skating was in 2023 after his daughters joined the club, and he is well on his way to becoming a great speed skater and a certified coach. 

Coach Stanley

Stanley Chang, Beginner Coach

Stanley has been with VSSC for over 8 years. First as parent and on-ice helper for Special Olympics and later an integral part of the development team for our club. Stanley has NCCP certifications as FUNdamentals Leader, FUNdamentals Coach and Introduction to Competition (In-Training).

Pete Friedel, Beginner Coach

As a competitive cyclist, Pete took a keen interest in understanding all aspects of speed skating development since joining the club as a parent. He has acquired both NCCP certifications of FUNdamentals Leader and FUNdamentals Coach (Trained).

Female Coach

Giang-Vi Nguyen, Beginner Coach

Giang-Vi has been speed skating since 2012. She has competed in provincial competitions in long-track and short-track speed skating. She represented Vancouver-Richmond in the 2016 and 2018 BC Winter Games and CanWest. She also enjoys coaching and working with skaters of all levels. Giang-Vi is studying biochemistry at UBC, and is currently In-Training for her FUNdamentals Leaders certification.

Jasmine Chase, Intermediate/Advanced Coach

Jasmine “Jaz” Chase joined VSSC in 2023 and has brought her incredible skating knowledge and coaching skill to our intermediate and advanced groups. She started speed skating at age 8 years old with the Ottawa Pacers Club after seeing it in the Olympics and begging to be signed up. After several years of racing short track provincially, she skated at her first long track Canada Cup competition when she was 15 and never looked back. After years of training and racing on outdoor long track ovals and indoor short-track rinks, she moved to Calgary in 2015 to train full-time with the Olympic Oval high-performance program. During her five years with the Oval she raced in national competitions and North American events like Can-Ams. Her best distances were the 1500m and 3000m, and her highest overall season ranking was 5th in the mass start!

Marilou Lamy, Dryland

Marilou Lamy is a physiotherapist, and a Laval University graduate. Having worked with athletes in a multitude of sports including gymnastics, rugby, handball, football, and speed skating, her experience is wide-reaching. Marilou has been with the Canadian National track & field team for more than 25 years and has offered her professional experience in many international events including 4 Olympics and the Paris Olympics this summer. At VSSC she helps skaters with dryland from time to time, and has offered her wisdom on injury prevension in summer camp sessions.

Basic Requirements 

To ensure we’re adhering to high standards for club safety and training, we require the following items from all our coaches:

1. Criminal Record Checkthis is a provincial form: get in touch before you submit, as we can coordinate with Speed Skating BC and ensure there is no fee paid as you are working as a volunteer.

2. Two required online safety courses

For the future, the club is also happy to support you in achieving speed skating coaching certifications through Speed Skating BC, such as FUNdamentals Leader, Coach, Competition coaching, and more. Let us know if you are interested in seeking these credentials!

Adam Ingle, Head Coach 2007-2023

Coach Adam
Coach Adam Ingle coached at Vancouver Velocity Speed Skating club for 7 years.

Coach Adam Ingle began coaching speed skating in 2005 with the Prince George Blizzard where he spent seven years leading the Intermediate Group before moving to the Advanced Group. Ingle became Vancouver Head Coach in 2015 and continues to work with our Intermediate/Advanced Group.

Adam has multiple NCCP (National Coaching Certification Program) certifications, culminating in a Competition Development Certification in June 2016. Adam is also recipient of both the viaSport BC Regional/Provincial Coach of the Year (2018) and BC Speed Skating Association Coach of the Year (2013). In both 2019 and 2023, Adam was selected to join the Long Track coaching team for TeamBC at Canada Winter Games.

Vancouver Speed Skating coach Wilfred

Wilfred Chan, Junior Coach

Wilfred took a year off from high performance competitive skating to focus on academics. Lucky for us Wilfred is able to come out and inspire and coach our younger skaters. 

Short Track Speed skating coaches

Simon Mikulash, Junior Coach

Simon has competing at the highest level in British Columbia and recently represented our province at the 2021-22 Short Track Canada Cup Junior Final. Simon is In-Training for his FUNdamentals Leader certification.
