OUR COACHES
David Zeibin, Head Coach
David joined VVSSC in 2023 after his daughters joined the club, and now coaches all groups with a focus on skill development and experiencing the joy of skating. He is an NCCP-certified coach in the FUNdamentals and Introduction to Competition contexts, and is also Competition Development trained. David also holds a Sport Performance Coaching Certificate from CSI Pacific.
David was the Zone 5 head coach for the 2026 Trail-Rossland BC Winter Games, and was named the Speed Skating BC Recreational Coach of the Year in 2025 and SSBC Competitive Coach of the Year in 2026!
Hyundo Shin, High-Performance Lead Coach
Hyundo joined VVSSC in 2025 and coaches our high-performance athletes. He brings many accomplishments and deep experience to the club: Member of the South Korean National Speed Skating Team (1998-1999); Member of the Junior National Team, National Training Squad, and National Team Candidate Pool in Long Track and Short Track Speed Skating; Certified Competition Official for the Korea Skating Union (Domestic Level 2); and Junior Short Track Coach and Equipment Technician. Hyundo was an elite athlete throughout his skating career with numerous national competition awards.
Shan Shukla, Technical Director
Coach Shan joined VVSSC in the 2023 season and has been an amazing addition to the club, coaching our Intermediate and Advanced groups with thoughtfulness, dedication, and real vision. A recent transplant from Ontario, Shan laced up speed skates for the first time at the age of 8 starting off at the Brampton Speed Skating Club, in Brampton, Ontario, then went on to skate with the Toronto, and Cambridge Speed Skating Clubs competing in Provincial level competitions, the Ontario Winter Games, and Nationals. In the relay, he was part of Team Ontario and secured the Silver medal in 2011!
Stanley Chang, Beginner & Special Olympics Lead Coach
Coach Stan has been with VVSSC for over 10 years. First as parent and on-ice helper for Special Olympics, and later an integral part of the development team for our club. Stanley has NCCP certifications as FUNdamentals Leader, FUNdamentals Coach and Introduction to Competition (In-Training).
Pete Friedel, Intermediate/Beginner Lead Coach
As a competitive cyclist, Pete took a keen interest in understanding all aspects of speed skating development since joining the club as a parent. He has acquired both NCCP certifications of FUNdamentals Leader and FUNdamentals Coach (Trained).
Giang-Vi Nguyen, Intermediate/Advanced Lead Coach
Giang-Vi has been speed skating since 2012. She has competed in provincial competitions in long-track and short-track speed skating, and represented Vancouver-Richmond in the 2016 and 2018 BC Winter Games and CanWest. She enjoys coaching and working with skaters of all levels. Giang-Vi is attending pharmacy school at UBC, was an assistant coach for the 2024 Lhtako-Quesnel BC Winter Games, and is currently In-Training for her FUNdamentals Coach certification.
Sara Orchard, Learn to Skate Lead Coach
Sara joined VVSSC in 2024 as a parent on-ice helper and, in 2025, assumed the role as Lead Instructor for the new Learn to Skate program. She is a former Gold-level test skater with Skate Canada and brings extensive experience teaching learn-to-skate programs in various capacities. She is currently In-Training for her FUNdamentals Coach Certification.
Teresa Thiessen, Beginner/Learn to Skate Assistant Coach
Teresa has been inline skating since 2018 and joined VVSSC in 2023 when her four boys took up speed skating. An enthusiastic club member, she loves volunteering in the heat box to keep competitions running smoothly and supporting the next generation of racers.

Past Coaches
Adam Ingle, Head Coach 2015-2023

Coach Adam Ingle began coaching speed skating in 2005 with the Prince George Blizzard where he spent seven years leading the Intermediate Group before moving to the Advanced Group. Adam became VVSSC Head Coach in 2015 and retired in 2023, although he continues to work with our skaters as a long track coach when possible.
Adam has multiple NCCP (National Coaching Certification Program) certifications, culminating in a Competition Development Certification in June 2016. Adam is also recipient of both the viaSport BC Regional/Provincial Coach of the Year (2018) and BC Speed Skating Association Coach of the Year (2013). In both 2019 and 2023, Adam was selected to join the Long Track coaching team for TeamBC at Canada Winter Games.

Basic Requirements
To ensure we’re adhering to high standards for club safety and training, we require the following items from all our coaches:
1. Criminal Record Check – this is a provincial form: get in touch before you submit, as we can coordinate with Speed Skating BC and ensure there is no fee paid as you are working as a volunteer.
2. Two required online safety courses
- Coaching Association of Canada SafeSport Module (1.5 hr online course):
- Coaching Association of Canada Making Head Way in Speed Skating (1.5 hr online course)
For the future, the club is also happy to support you in achieving speed skating coaching certifications through Speed Skating BC, such as FUNdamentals Leader, Coach, Competition coaching, and more. Let us know if you are interested in seeking these credentials!
